Man City’s youth steal the spotlight on preseason

Man City’s youth steal the spotlight on preseason - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

In recent years, Manchester City and youth players haven’t been mentioned in the same sentence positively. City though have been trying to change that as they have put a lot of money into their academies and facilities, and this preseason has shown their efforts are paying off.

In their preseason tour of Australia, Manuel Pellegrini has given the chance to many young prospects. Before the tour, City fans may have known Marcos Lopes and Zuccilini, but may not have known the names of players like Brandon Barker, Manu Garcia, and Kelechi Iheanacho. They all put in great performances in the friendlies against Adelaide United, Melbourne City, and Roma, and should be names to remember for City supporters.

While staying up the Gold Coast in Australia, City played Against Adelaide United and Melbourne City. Against Adelaide Brandon Barker shined the brightest as he controlled the game with his silky dribbling and touches. He showed great football intelligence and opened the scoring for the Citizens when he cut off the left wing. Bruno Zuculini scored the second for City with a nice volley from a Clichy cross. Iheanacho also showed his talent as he ran the Adelaide defence ragged all night. The game against their sister club, Melbourne City, proved tougher but the youth this time played alongside established Manchester City starters Yaya Toure and Samir Nasri. Brandon Barker again was always a threat on the left, constantly turning his man inside and out and carved out several chances for his teammates, notably one for Nasri in which the Frenchman was too casual. Iheanacho again never gave the defence a chance to breathe, and Zuccilini set up Nasri for the winning goal in Brisbane.

The game against Roma though is the match in which the City youth stole the spotlight from established first team players such as David Silva, Samir Nasri and Yaya Toure. Marcos Lopes, Zuccilini and Iheanacho especially stood out. Marcos Lopes had the ball glued to his feet whenever in possession and left Roma players in his dust. He also showed the flair that made him City’s youngest first team goal scorer. Zuculini showed great intelligence and composure when on the ball. Iheanacho though was the stand out performer of the night as he led the front line over star strikers Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic. He hunted down every loose ball and stalked the defenders. This was exemplified when he netted City’s second goal after chasing down a wayward Ashley Cole pass and having the composure to slot it past De Sanctis.

The preseason tour of Australia showed City’s youth development is as good as any other in the world. Players such as Brandon Barker, Marcos Lopes, Zuculini and Ihenacho show that City don’t just have to spend Sheikh Mansour’s money to have good players.

Manchester United Transfer: Di Maria replacement?

Manchester United star Angel Di Maria is set to complete a move to PSG later this week and Van Gaal wants the Bayern Munich star to replace Di Maria at United.

Earlier this week, Van Gaal claimed that United need a superstar signing to bridge the gap with Barcelona and Real Madrid. It seems Muller is the star he is chasing.

Although Bayern Munich are unwilling to sell and it seems the player is happy at Bayern, United are confident that a 100 million euro offer could turn heads in Munich.

Manchester United Transfer: Statement of Intent

Money is not an issue for Manchester United and they are willing to back the manager wth the cash if Muller agrees to a move.

Further, David De Gea is also being linked with a move to Real Madrid.

In such a scenario, it is imperative for a club like Manchester United to make a statement signing and it seems the Red Devils will go all out for Thomas Muller.

Wenger reveals Arsenal missed out on world class winger, says deal was close

Wenger reveals Arsenal missed out on world class winger, says deal was close - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Eden Hazard

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has revealed the Gunners were “a few million” shy away from signing Eden Hazard before he signed for Chelsea.

The Blues won the Champions League in the 2011-12 season and the 24-year-old confirmed that he was joining the then European champions, snubbing the likes of Arsenal, Manchester United and Manchester City, who were all after his services.

The Belgium international has been a superstar for the west London club as he played a key role in helping Chelsea win the Premier League title last season.

When asked whether the north London club were interested in signing Hazard, Wenger said. “Yes.” He said “A few million!” when further question as to how close the deal was.

The Blues winger has been compared to the likes of Real Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo by Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho. However, Wenger suggested that there is no comparison between the Portuguese international and Hazard at this stage.

“It is all about opinions. You have to compare the numbers. I must say players like Messi and Ronaldo still score 50 goals and that is exceptional,” Arsenal manager said.

Despite that, the 65-year-old is aware of Hazard’s capabilities and said that he can decide the course of the game.

” He can decide the games and you put the top players in this kind of calibre when they can decide the games with something special. Hazard is in this category, now to reach the other two or three that are dominating world football at the moment I think it demands consistency which he is still to do,” Wenger explained.

Louis Van Gaal wants to sign a superstar for Manchester United

Louis Van Gaal wants to sign a superstar for Manchester United - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has made a sensational claim earlier today that the club needs to sign a player with world class calibre, in the level of Hazard, Neymar or Suarez.

The Dutchman claimed that it is impossible to sign Cristiano because of the fee Real Madrid would demand, but his team needs a superstar in order to bridge the gap between them and the European elite next season.

The former Holland boss also stated that his team lacks vision and creativity in the final third and will struggled to break down teams that are defensively organised and ‘park the bus’.

Van Gaal claimed that Chelsea and City have the likes of Hazard and Aguero to open up such deep defenses, but United lack a player of that ilk. While Van Gaal appreciated the contributions of someone like Ashley Young, he claimed that the England winger is no Neymar.

“We can use much more creativity,” he told reporters in the United States. “We have Wayne [Rooney], [Juan] Mata, [Memphis] Depay, [Ashley] Young, [Adnan] Januzaj, [James] Wilson, [Ander] Herrera. Young has had a fantastic season, but he is not a Neymar and we have to compete with that kind of class.

“When it is possible to buy, for a reasonable price, players from that level, we shall do that because they can contribute as they are better.

“Ronaldo? He may come, but it is not possible. Why not? Because you have the club [Real], Ronaldo and then you have Manchester United and how much Manchester United want to spend.”

“Chelsea have Hazard,” Van Gaal added. “He can always make goals, he can always make an action and decide a goal. Chelsea also have Willian and Oscar. Manchester City have [Sergio] Aguero, it’s the same type. Barcelona has [Lionel] Messi, Neymar and [Luis] Suarez. We as Manchester United have to compete with these clubs, so we have to look also for that kind of players.

“You need creative players. You need that because you have to disorganise [teams that park] the bus and, next year, there might be more teams who are parking the bus, so we must look for more creativity.”

“With Morgan Schneiderlin, with Bastian Schweinsteiger, with Memphis Depay, with Matteo Darmian, we are better than last year. But we have to be much better and I say to you that means the creativity of my players in the front,” he said.

“At Chelsea, we didn’t score and they scored and that is the difference in the game. If we had won that game, the gap would have been five points and the pressure was high [on Chelsea].”

It would be certainly interesting to see what his players think of his comments but there is no doubt that United have the financial means to attract the best players in the world, someone who can come in and take them to the next level.

But considering the current state of the market, it is difficult to see United attracting that kind of talent. With the likes of Messi, Ronaldo, Suarez, Hazard and Neymar definitely off the market, who could Van Gaal realistically go for? Benzema? Reus? Muller? time will tell.

Jose Mourinho confirms latest Chelsea transfer

Jose Mourinho confirms latest Chelsea transfer - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has confirmed the transfer of Mohamed Salah to a Serie A club this summer.

The Egyptian winger has fallen out of favour at the Bridge and spent last season on loan at Fiorentina. The goalscoring winger enjoyed a successful spell at Florence and will now make his move to Italy permanent.

According to reports, Salah is closing in on a move to Roma and Mourinho has confirmed that the player is no longer a part of his squad.

“He doesn’t belong in my squad and he’s not staying here,” declared Mourinho during the US summer tour.

“The important thing is that he plays like he did at Fiorentina, so I’m happy with him going on a loan.

“Italian football is difficult to play, especially for attacking players. If it’s not Fiorentina, it’s Roma or Inter or Juve – I don’t know. Maybe he has a loan.

“He’s a good boy and a good player. He needs more top level football, so I’m happy with any decision he and the club make.”

Further, what was believed to be a cash only deal, Mourinho claims that Salah could be loaned out for next season with an option to buy.

Fiorentina were also interested in the Chelsea winger, but it appears that the players has already pledged his services to Rudi Garcia.

LVG confirms injury to United star and hints De Gea to start against Tottenham

LVG confirms injury to United star and hints De Gea to start against Tottenham - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Schweinsteiger

Manchester United have suffered a massive blow as their star summer signing Bastian Schweinsteiger has suffered a “little injury.”

The World Cup winning midfielder arrived at Old Trafford after leaving Bayern Munich, following a 17 year long spell. He came as a second half substitute during the first two matches, which was won comfortably by the Premier League giants against Club America and San Jose Earthquakes.

United face Barcelona in the third pre-season fixture of the tour in the United States on Saturday. The former Netherlands manager has admitted that the line-up against the Catalan club will also be the same line-up when the Red Devils face Tottenham Hotspur in the opening day of the season on August 8.

“Bastian shall not play because he had a little injury. I shall play with the line-up I think we could play against Spurs. we play the first half with players for 60 minutes. I have to make a selection now,” Van Gaal said.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager also admitted that goalkeeper David de Gea may take the position in between the poles against the treble winners on Saturday. He has passed fit for the third fixture of the tour.

The Spain international has one year left on his contract and has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. With De Gea set to start against Barcelona and Van Gaal’s comments saying the lineup against the La Liga giants will be the same for the clash against Tottenham, it is likely that De Gea will not leave until the new season starts.

“When a player is injured it’s the same thing you have to wait in the season. I give players time to recover and build up their fitness. It’s still possible he’ll be ready to start the season against Spurs because he shall play tomorrow,” United manager added.

£14m Manchester United signing ‘can replace Paul Scholes’

£14m Manchester United signing ‘can replace Paul Scholes’ - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Former Bayern Munich superstar, Bastian Schweinsteiger has been likened to Manchester United legend Paul Scholes.

Speaking at a press conference, United fan Usain Bolt claimed that Schweinsteiger could be the man to replace Paul Scholes and be a key player in the midfield for the Red Devils. United struggled to replace Scholes after his retirement and could never really build a midfield strong enough to challenge the top teams.

However, Bolt reckons that Schweinsteiger will add to the team and could operate in Scholes’ role at United.

Van Gaal will be expecting the same from Schweinsteiger after having forked out 14 million pounds for him. Schweinsteiger is expected to play the role of a controller with the likes of Herrera and Schneiderlin being the engines of United’ midfield next season.

Further, Schweinsteiger’ defensive input could be a huge asset for United’ shaky defence.

Bolt, during the press conference, claimed that United’ defence looked shaky in the pre-season games but the team looked better overall.

Further, he also claimed that he is not used to seeing United play a slow paced game, but Van Gaal is different to Ferguson and that he is getting used to Van Gaal’s style.

If the pre-season games were anything to go by, United desperately need a new centre back in before the window closes.

As far as Schweinsteiger is concerned, the German midfielder is world class and has nothing to prove. But he will need to be at his very best if he wants to replicate the contributions of Paul Scholes, one of the finest midfielders of this generation.
