Liverpool could complete winger transfer today, manager confirms the player will leave - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Will Liverpool sign any player on the transfer deadline day?

According to reports in Spain, Liverpool are favourites to sign Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev on loan for the rest of the season.

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane confirmed in his post-match press conference that Cheryshev could leave the club on Monday.

“We’ll see tomorrow but yes, Cheryshev could leave. He’s a great player but he needs to be playing regularly. The most important thing for him is that he gets minutes. He is a hard-working player and he needs to be building up playing time. I wish him the best. If he has the chance to leave, I’d be delighted for him. We’ll see what happens tomorrow”, said Zidane after Sunday’s 6-0 win over Espanyol, as quoted by AS.

Any possibility of him moving out on loan to Villarreal has already been ruled out, as club president Fernando Roig confirmed a few days ago.

As it stands, the Russian international is likely to play in the Premier League for the rest of the season.

Several top Premier League clubs like Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea, have had shown an interest in signing the 25-year-old winger earlier this season, but it seems that Liverpool are closest to landing the player. The Reds were heavily interested in signing him last summer, but then Real Manager Rafael Benitez had blocked any potential move.

Cheryshev has only managed 117 minutes of playing time this season, and he is considered surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu. His current contract with Madrid is due to expire on 30 June 2017, and would be allowed to leave on loan.

La Liga giants Sevilla also reportedly want him, and it remains to be seen whether Liverpool can wrap up his signing before Monday night.

FA Cup Draw 5th Round: Fixtures, Dates and Reaction

FA Cup Draw 5th Round: Fixtures, Dates and Reaction - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Arsenal will face Championship side Hull City in the fifth round of the 2016 FA Cup at the Emirates Stadium, while Manchester United will play away to League One side Shrewsbury Town.

Chelsea face Manchester City at Stamford Bridge in the pick of the fixtures for the fifth round draw.

Elsewhere, Everton face Premier League side AFC Bournemouth, Watford will host Championship side Leeds United and the winner of Liverpool and West Ham United will face Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park.

Dates: The fixtures will be played from February 19 to February 22.

Premier League ties in Round Five:

Bournemouth won 2-1 against Portsmouth on Saturday to progress to the next round, and now face Everton, who defeated Carlisle 3-0 on Sunday.

Crystal Palace ended their barren spell of run – one win in seven games – after winning 1-0 against Stoke City in the FA Cup fourth round tie at Selhurst Park. The Eagles travel to North London to face Tottenham Hotspur in the next round.

Both Chelsea and Manchester City progressed through the fourth round without any difficulty. City thrashed Remi Garde’s Aston Villa 4-0, where youngster Kelechi Iheanacho scored the first hat-trick of his career.

Chelsea were equally impressive in their 5-1 victory away at MK Dons on Sunday. Oscar scored a hat-trick for the Blues, but most importantly Eden Hazard hinted of returning to old form having finally found the back of the net to end his goal drought.

Chelsea will fancy their chances of progressing, with the game taking place at Stamford Bridge, however, City have a better record against them in this competition, having won four of their previous five FA Cup games against them.

Minnows looking to cause upset:

United travel to New Meadow to take on Shrewsbury Town, where both the sides will face each other for the first time in history.

The Red Devils have been lucky enough with the FA draws, as they have drawn nine football league clubs from last 10 FA Cup and League cup ties.

Louis van Gaal’s side progressed comfortably to the fifth round after beating Derby County 3-1 at Pride Park, and United will be looking to overcome the League One side with ease again.

Arsenal face Hull City for the third season in a row in the FA Cup. The Gunners won both previous encounters and being at home will make them strong favourites to progress, but Hull City are doing exceptionally well in the Championship and are capable of causing an upset.

Chelsea FC: Alexandre Pato’s arrival is risk-free with a potential high-reward

Chelsea FC: Alexandre Pato’s arrival is risk-free with a potential high-reward - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Chelsea completed the loan signing of Alexandre Pato from Brazilian club Corinthians in the hopes of the forward being an adequate reinforcement that could propel them to a good second half of the season.

After winning the league as well as securing the Capital One Cup last season, Chelsea underwent a drastic dip in form this season that also saw José Mourinho get sacked. Guus Hiddink was brought in and the interim manager has done a good job in stabilising things. In fact, the London club is unbeaten under the former Holland boss. However, Hiddink knows that for his side to ensure they finish the season well, certain reinforcements have to be brought in and they’ve done just that, by securing the loan signing of once highly rated forward Alexandre Pato.

In fact, Pato was close to joining Chelsea in the past as well. It is believed that when Luiz Felipe Scolari was in charge of the club back in 2008-09, he tried hard to lure the 18-year-old Pato to join the London club. Naturally though, AC Milan weren’t keen on selling the striker they thought could dominate proceedings for a long time given the way he broke out in 2006.

pato

At the end of 2008-09, Pato was named Serie A Young Player of the Year after he finished the season as AC Milan’s leading goalscorer. He was regarded as the next big thing and people assumed that everything they heard about the Brazilian was true after the kind of performances he had put in previously. Sadly, a series of injuries severely halted his growth and he was excluded from Brazil’s 2010 World Cup squad. AC Milan put in a lot of effort on ensuring the Brazilian could reach full fitness (for a stretch of time), but were unable to do the same so unsurprisingly, when they were offered £11.5m from Corinthians in January 2013, they decided it was time to cut their losses and sell the player while they could still make a profit on him. He scored 17 goals for Corinthians in 57 games that year, which isn’t a bad record, but his infamous penalty miss against former teammate Dida worsened his relationship with the fans, who thought he was not giving enough on the pitch, as well as some players. He underwent heavy criticism and it didn’t come as a surprise when he was shipped across the city to Sao Paulo FC.

Alexandre Pato

Pato has spent the last two years on loan across the city at Sao Paulo FC. In his two years at the club, he has scored 38 goals, including 26 last year, a decent tally. What is more important however, is the fact that he has managed to avoid any major injury setbacks.

He has been used as a second striker and a lone #9 during his time with the club, but has really shown promise when used on the wings under manager Juan Carlos Osorio and he scored 11 times in 27 games being positioned on the flanks.

On the left wing, he looks for opportunities to cut inside, and has generally done well in either putting himself in a good position to score or creating chances for his teammates. He has also shown he hasn’t lost his eye for goal, which is demonstrated though his goal record which might not be as prolific, but is still extremely decent.

His work rate is the one thing that has constantly been under fire. He has been accused of not giving enough on the pitch and not helping out with defensive duties when positioned on the flanks. A full-back looks for support from a winger and Pato’s reluctance to track back has often left his left-back exposed.

Diego Costa slump

It will be interesting to see where he will be used by Hiddink given he has been more successful out wide recently, but has been brought to cover Diego Costa. With Loic Remy departing for Leicester in all likelihood, it probably makes more sense to assume Pato will be used as a striker, or a second striker as he was in his first year at Sao Paulo. On paper, he looks like an able cover for the Spaniard but it must be noted that he hasn’t played since November and will take some time and preparation to regain match fitness. Therefore, the over-reliance on Costa doesn’t decrease drastically with the Brazilian’s arrival.

Considering it’s a loan signing, it’s relatively risk-free for Chelsea. The upside is that it has a potentially high reward if the 26-year-old can get going once again. As opposed to the arrivals of Fernando Torres and recently Radamel Falcao, the good thing for Pato is that there are low expectations and subsequently little pressure on him. However, he must grab this brief (for now) return to European football with both hands as it looks like a last chance for him to prove his worth at the highest level.

Manchester United target to undergo medical today and complete £14m transfer in the next 24 hours

Manchester United target to undergo medical today and complete £14m transfer in the next 24 hours - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Everton are edging closer to signing Lokomotiv Moscow striker Oumar Niasse, according to reports from The Guardian.

The 25-year-old is expected to undergo a medical on Monday morning and finalise his personal terms on a £13.5m transfer from the Russian club.

He has scored 12 goals and registered 10 assists this season in 21 games for Lokomotiv, and was voted the Russian Premier League’s player of 2015.

Niasse is known for his strength and explosive pace, and his playing style is perfect for the Premier League.

Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United were also reportedly interested in signing him. Earlier this month, The Guardian reported that United had scouted him extensively over the first half of the season.

He rejected offers from big European clubs like Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco last summer, as he always wanted to play in the Premier League.

Two things stand out very important here. First, he chose to join Everton, probably understanding that he would get more playing time under Roberto Martinez than at Chelsea or United. Needless to say, it can very well happen that none of Chelsea or United actually made an offer for him.

Secondly, the size of the fee is eye-catching, as it stands out to be the most expensive incoming deal involving English clubs so far in the January window, eclipsing Newcastle United’s £12m signings for both Jonjo Shelvey from Swansea City and Andros Townsend from Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea build confidence with win over MK Dons

♠ Posted by Unknown in ,

Chelsea build confidence with win over MK Dons - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

After a poor start to the 2015/16 season, Chelsea have finally gotten back to their winning ways. Chelsea extended their unbeaten run under Guus Hiddink to 9 games after a convincing 5-1 win against MK Dons in the FA Cup fourth round.

Confidence had been running low at Chelsea, but every win has been helping them get back on track. The players at Chelsea have shown massive signs of improvement since the arrival of Guus Hiddink and The Blues have started to climb up the Premier League table. After this important FA Cup win over MK Dons, the confidence of the Chelsea players is surely higher than it has been in quite some time.

Chelsea played with a purpose against MK Dons. It seemed as though every attack could end up in a goal. They were extremely creative and dynamic going forward, which is something that they have lacked all season, scoring just 32 goals in the Premier League. Chelsea were also very solid at the back, not allowing any easy opportunities for MK Dons to score. Their one goal in the match came from a heavy deflection off of Nemanja Matic. The Blues showed character to fight back after MK Dons equalized and maintained control of the game. Chelsea’s passing helped them keep control of the game up until the final whistle.

There were many standout players in Chelsea’s victory over MK Dons. Oscar has not been a consistent starter for Chelsea this season, starting 14 games and scoring three goals for them in the Premier League. He surely showed the coach what he was capable of as he scored a first half hat-trick. Another Chelsea player who is yet to make a big impact this season is Eden Hazard. The Belgian left midfielder was the best player in the Premier League last season, winning the PFA player of the year award. Hazard provided an assist and a goal in Chelsea’s victory over MK Dons, which was his first goal for Chelsea in 273 days. Ruben Loftus-Cheek is a future star for Chelsea at only 20 years of age. The English central midfielder has made sporadic starts for The Blues this season, but started this FA Cup game and contributed an assist.

Chelsea certainly do not have time to celebrate after defeating MK Dons. The Blues have numerous tougher fixtures rapidly approaching. Chelsea play against Manchester United in the Premier League on February 7, followed by an away game against PSG in the Champions League on February 16. Just four days after they play PSG, The Blues face Manchester City in the fifth round of the FA Cup on February 20. Chelsea may be facing tough competition in the near future, but they have certainly shown recently that they are capable of winning every one of these games.

Guus Hiddink has proven to be a great manager for Chelsea this season and after going 9 games unbeaten, Chelsea’s confidence is starting to grow. It may be too late to win the Premier League this season, but the FA Cup and Champions League are two competitions that they can certainly win. Chelsea have certainly shown improvement in recent games, but they will need to keep up this run of good form if they have any hope of a winning a trophy this season.

Qatar Under-23 show the way forward to 2022 World Cup

♠ Posted by Unknown in ,

Qatar Under-23 show the way forward to 2022 World Cup - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

The biggest thing to happen to Qatari football is expected to be the 2022 World Cup. However, the biggest thing happening to Qatari football may just occur six years earlier. Currently underway in Qatar is the AFC Under 23 Championship which is also doubling as part of the qualification process for the 2016 Summer Olympic Games and the hosts, in that respect, are doing rather well thank you very much.

Qatar qualified from Group A with a 100% record of three wins out of three and were very impressive in doing so. The host side came back from 1-0 down to beat China in the opening game and a new world star was born, Abdelkarim Hassan, who is the Under 23 skipper. The muscular defender headed the equaliser before netting his second of the game with a blistering 25 yard drive that had Carlos Alberto written all over it. Another of Qatar`s future stars, Ahmed Alaa tapped in a third after a flowing and swift counter attack caught China too far upfield as they pressed for an equaliser.

In game number two Qatar beat Iran 2-1 with Alaa and Hassan each scoring once. The hosts completed a third consecutive victory when they dispatched Syria 4-2. Again they had to come from behind after Syria opened the scoring after just four minutes but once again Abdelkarim Hassan came good with a headed equaliser, his fourth goal in three games. Alaa made it 2-1 with a crisp finish after a swift burst forward and Almoez Ali made it 3-1 just short of the half hour. Syria reduced the arrears eight minutes from time but Alaa`s second goal clinched the points and the group.

Few people gave any consideration, as far as football is concerned, to Qatar until they were awarded the 2022 World Cup. Then the scrutiny became quite a few degrees hotter than intense, and heat is only one of the controversies that enshrouds this former Middle East backwater that is now the richest, per capita, nation on earth thanks to its gas and oil reserves. But the current AFC Under 23 Championships may well change perception of Qatar, from a football perspective, if the host team of talented youngsters are judged, as they should be, on football not politics or media spin.

With a population smaller than Bristol and less footballers than the Solomon Islands there is a very restricted talent pool for Qatar to select from as they build towards the 2022 World Cup. With that as the background the football authorities, backed by a tangibly endless cash pot, established a cunning plan, as recently as 2004.

That was the year the Aspire Academy was formed to find and develop the best male Qatari athletes, including footballers. In 2007 Aspire sent out thousands of scouts to identify Africa`s brightest football prospects. Four years later Aspire beat Manchester United`s Youth Team 5-1 to win Ireland`s Milk Cup, one of the world`s most prestigious youth tournaments. However, when the Qatar National team beat Algeria, 1-0, in a 2015 friendly, six of the Qatari team were not born there. The process of awarding citizenship to players born outside the country caused concern for FIFA and is currently being phased out by Qatar authorities.

Never the less the influence of foreign players and coaches, tempted by astronomical salaries, if not the standard of domestic football, cannot be underestimated. It must also not be forgotten that in 2014 the Qatari Under 19 team won the AFC Under 19 Championship in Myanmar, formerly Burma, and qualified for the 2015 FIFA Under 20 World Cup in New Zealand, and all players in both those successes were students of the Aspire Academy.

Akram Afif scored the only goal of the Under 19 Final, after coming on as a substitute. At the time he was a player with Sevilla in Spain and in June 2015 he graduated from the Aspire Academy, the same year he joined Belgian side Eupen, where he plays with several other team mates from the Qatar Under 23 side.

Ahmed Alaaeldin, or Alaa, is the oldest player in the current Under 23 side and will be 23 at the end of January 2016. He is a forward blessed with lightning pace and a potent left foot. He is another of the team who is expected to be at his peak by the time the 2022 World Cup is staged. He is currently a member of the Al Rayyan Sports Club and the Qatar Olympic team though the worldwide audience he is enthralling in the Under 23 Championships should see many a top European club beating a path to his door once the current competition is over.

Ahmed Moein, aged just 19, is also a Eupen player. He is a midfielder regarded by many as the central pivot for the Under 23 team and, like Abdelkarim Hassan, a player around which the national team will be built with 2022 in mind. Allegedly he based his midfield passing game around hours of watching videos of Frank Lampard in action. Not a bad example for the Qatar youngster to follow,

Of the many hot prospects wearing the shirt of Qatar in the AFC Championships none is hotter than Abdelkarim Hassan, a 22 year old defender, and captain of the team, who plays for Al Sadd, the top club in Qatar. He was the youngest player to appear in AFC Champions League when he debuted in 2011, coming off the bench, aged 17, against Esteghlal. In 2012-13 he was voted Young Player of the Year in Qatar Stars League. A massive bonus in his ability catalogue is a penchant for goals, 14 of them in 75 club games since 2010.

Even before a ball was kicked in the current Under 23 competition Hassan was being touted as being the bedrock on which the basis of the full Qatar national would be built for 2022. But his performances as Qatar swept through Group A were nothing short of sensational. He finished the group with four goals and few would back against him finishing the tournament with the Golden Boot as he surged into the world spotlight and a bright future.

Standing 6 feet and one inch tall and weighing in at 79kg Abdel cuts an awesome figure on the field. His physique and athleticism are complemented by his technical skills and not only his goals but the variety of those goals, make him an outstanding prospect for many years to come.

Abdelkarim Hassan is unlikely to see the year out at his current club, Al Sadd. If he is not strutting his stuff in any one of the top European leagues by next year the clubs in those leagues may need to dispatch new binoculars to their scouting network. Surely no one is going to miss out on an athletic, fast and powerful defender who can actually play football and score goals, aged just 22, ARE THEY?

Those three are the pick of a very talented bunch but there is a word of caution to add to what is undoubtedly great potential. They are the twin dangers of complacency and motivation. Any player currently part of the national youth teams of Qatar, from Under 17 to Under 23, may well consider themselves as `shoe-ins` for the 2022 World Cup. However, some of those players may well have to move on to pastures new in the next six years to earn or even keep a place in the frame for the Qatar World Cup.

There is no doubt that the infrastructure in Qatar will be ready but will the team? Most of the current Under 23 squad have at least two or three years left at that level though many will graduate much sooner. The 2016 AFC Under 23 Championships is very much a dry run as far as 2022 is concerned but it may turn out to be far more important for the national team, from a football perspective rather than an infrastructure one.

There is always hope and expectation of a host nation, which sadly often goes unfulfilled. Even the most neutral of observers can see that whatever happens with the current Under 23 Qatar side in this year`s AFC Championships the looks on those young footballers faces, not to mention their body language, tells its own tale.

They are loving it and cannot wait to take on the world in 2022 and the world better beware.

Television Rights – How the Premier League and FIFA are the Big Winners

♠ Posted by Unknown in ,

Television Rights – How the Premier League and FIFA are the Big Winners - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

From next season, it will cost Sky or BT around £10 million to broadcast each game, with the new television rights finally coming into practice. The deal, worth around £5.1 billion, will see the bottom team of next season’s Premier League collect £99 million, the same amount Chelsea got last season when they won the trophy.

The champions will pocket £150 million next season, a 50% increase in what the winner’s this year will gain. It is obvious to see why the likes of Norwich, Bournemouth and Newcastle have spent £67 million between them as they hope to survive in the top flight, which is 63% of the total money spent by all Premier League clubs this January.

Although, not all clubs have made a purchase this window yet, with Manchester United being one the several clubs who have not made an addition to their side.

It is clearly evident how the Premier League is the most lucrative competition in the world for clubs, with the Champions League winners expecting to pocket only £41 million from next season in prize money, despite a 46% increase from last season. It is believed that Sky were willing to lose the Champions League rights to BT as the Premier League is more watched and generates more money for the company’s themselves.

However, the Champions League gets more complicated when it comes to finances, as each clubs is awarded prize money and is allocated a market share of television rights in their country which is also dependent on how well their league progressed the year prior. So, Juventus actually benefitted financially more than Barcelona last season, despite losing the final to Lionel Messi’s treble winning side.

For example, as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid all progressed far into the Champions League, they had to share the money for the television rights in Spain. However, as Roma went out of the Champions League in the group stage, leaving Juventus as the sole Italian representative, the Turin side received £44 million in TV funds alone, compared to the Catalan’s £18 million in television rights.

The Champions League is the most handsome competition for it’s competitors however as the prize money is the highest in the world when you consider the sum made for each game, even more so than the FIFA World Cup.

Despite the turmoil which existed at FIFA and threatened the long-term sponsorship by some companies who were unhappy under Sepp Blatter, it remains a hugely profitable company.

FIFA’s revenue from the World Cup went up by 66% in 2014, compared to the South African competition in 2010. Of the $4.8 billion which FIFA made in 2014, $1.35 billion was from sponsorship, yet $1.7 billion was from TV rights.

Although with this increase also sees a sharp rise in prize money, where between 2010 and 2014, the money FIFA spent on prizes soared by 75%. Germany, in 2014, won $35 million for lifting the prestigious international trophy.

Furthermore, domestic clubs get a small fee for sending their players to the World Cup too, with $70 million set aside for this, and $100 million being used as insurance in case a player is injured for a long time and a domestic club needs to be compensated.

In 2011, FIFA confirmed that they had sold the TV rights for $1.85 billion when the World Cup’s in 2018 and 2022 take place which is a slight increase from the previous rights.

Overall, the trend is showing that prize money and television rights is increasing, and whilst this upwards movement is generating more funds for football now, it could only be a matter of time before the glass ceiling is found and broadcasters refuse to meet the growing demands of football TV rights.

Chinese Super League: Rise, Growth and Success

♠ Posted by Unknown in ,

Chinese Super League: Rise, Growth and Success - originally posted on Soccerlens.com

Football clubs have always been referred to as the ‘billionaire’s playground’, and this is proving to be more than the truth in China, where the second division of clubs have so far outspent La Liga having spent £33 million in the January transfer window. Even recently, Brazil international Alex Pato was targeted by Tianjin Quanjian in the lower division before deciding to move to Chelsea.

This trend is also matched in the Chinese Super League, where their total outlay of £106 million, is just a few million shy of the amount that Premier League clubs have so far splashed out. But why has there been a trend which has seen Ramires, Gervinho, Freddy Guarin and Paulinho swap the European leagues for China, especially considering that they are arguably in their prime age. All might be Brazilian, but the trend lies deeper when you consider there was David Beckham Didier Drogba, who have since been replaced by Tim Cahill and Demba Ba.

Well recently there was a story where Guangzhou Evergrande, managed by Luiz Felipe Scolari, sold their star player Elkseon, the Chinese Federation’s Footballer of the Year in 2014. Instead of moving abroad he remained in the league where now he plays in Shanghai. The owners confirmed that this deal was done for the sake of improving the competition in the league. It’s like Manchester City selling Sergio Aguero to Manchester United so that more teams are in the title race.

Tim Cahill, formerly of Everton and the MLS, recently claimed that the Chinese Super League has become more competitive and is a growing market.

In the recent case, there is no denying that for a club to spend £25 million on Ramires, or £15 million on Gervinho shows an unbelievable financial backing which many Premier League clubs could not even afford. For example, Ramires would be a record signing for 13 of the 20 Premier League clubs at that fee.

So how are Chinese clubs affording these players and for what reason are they doing this?

Well firstly, just like in other places across the world, there is a growing demand for football and this is becoming an increasingly attractive business plan for billionaires, or just other rich corporations who are looking to spend some money for leisure.

In 2014, there was a change of ownership at Guangzhou Evergrande, where online commerce agent Alibaba purchased 50% of the club for $193 million all for the sake of ‘entertainment’. They now sell around 40,000 tickets per game and 68 million are thought to have watched the AFC Champions League final in 2013, which increased to 83 million in 2015.

Long term, Guangzhou Evergrande also have one of the best football academies in the world. It is the biggest at 167 acres, cost £115 million to build and 2,400 children are coached there each year. There is also a deal with Real Madrid which sees Spanish coaches train the young footballers as they hope to build a nation who can go to World Cups again.

But China does not want participate in the competition only, as they also have an aim of hosting the competition. In a way, the Chinese Super League is following what Qatar did in the lead up to their 2022 World Cup bid; bringing in top talent who help to boost the profile of the league to show a passionate following of the sport in the region.

Since 2013 when David Beckham became China’s first global football ambassador, it became obvious that he was part of a bigger plan.

“I am honoured to have been asked to play such an important role at this special time in Chinese football history,” the former England international said three years ago.

“I’m excited by the prospect of promoting the world’s greatest game to Chinese sports fans as I’ve seen first hand the growing interest in football there.

“This is a wonderful sport that inspires people across the world and brings families together, so I’m relishing the opportunity of introducing more fans to the game.”

It’s clear that what we are seeing now is another stage of the football revolution, where the rise of high-profiled players in China is another stepping stone as they hope to host the World Cup in years to come.

Chelsea have agreed to loan the highly talented Brazilian striker Alexandre Pato from Corinthians for the remainder of the season.

The former AC Milan player was linked with a move back to Europe since last summer and he has now finally completed his return to European football.

Pato will aim to impress the Blues especially now that Chelsea have an option of making the move permanent at the end of the season for a fee of £7m.

The Brazilian striker arrived from Sao Paulo earlier this week and was spotted at Heathrow airport.

The 26-year-old will add much-needed goals, pace and flair to the Chelsea attack. The Brazilian is expected to be a backup option for Diego Costa, who has been struggling with injuries this season.

After an injury-plagued spell at Milan, Pato was forced to return to Brazil and the striker has recaptured his prodigious form since then. The Brazilian bagged 26 goals in his last season with Sao Paulo and will be looking to make an instant impact at Stamford Bridge.

Pato expressed his delight after completing the move and said: “I am so happy to sign for Chelsea. It is a dream for me.”

“I am looking forward to meeting and getting to know my new team-mates and cannot wait to play.”

“I thank Chelsea for their support and hope I can repay this faith to the club and its fans.”
