Liverpool and Manchester United, the two giants of English football, could find themselves involved in a transfer war for Brazilian attacking midfielder Roberto Firmino from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.
Tutto Mercato Web published a report yesterday where they claimed Manchester United are close to signing Firmino and are reportedly ready to pay €25m for his signature.
The 23-year-old has been one of the standout players in the Bundesliga over the past few seasons. Firmino is currently away on international duty at the Copa America, but it is the interest in him from top European clubs that has been making the headlines in the press.
Louis van Gaal has already signed Memphis Depay from PSV Eindhoven, but the Dutchman feels the need to add more quality attacking forwards in the side. His arrival will make the squad even stronger.
Tony Barrett of The Times, one of the most reliable journalist in the business and well connected with the Merseyside club, claims that Liverpool are considering a move for the Brazil midfielder. There are every possibilities that Raheem Sterling could join Manchester City in the summer, and Liverpool could be looking to replace the Englishman with Firmino.
Firmino’s agent recent said that his client wants to play in the Premier League, and Liverpool are deliberating whether to put in a firm interest in him.
Barrett says any move for Firmino would not be dependant on Sterling’s departure. Brendan Rodgers is particularly impressed by Firmino’s ability to operate in a number of roles.
Liverpool have already put deals in place to sign Danny Ings and James Milner, while Adam Bogdan and Joe Gomez likely to join the Merseyside club as well.
